Over the three days we held four sessions each based on watercolour painting. We studied several aspects using different subject in each beginning with basic colour blending, dry painting and wet in wet. as the students confidence and skills increased we looked at creating depth of field creating a greater complexity to our work.
Day 1 The Magpie chick. This little chap fell out of it’s nest and was rescued by a neighbour keeping it in a cardboard box. Here we can see the students learned how to create feather effects with a dry brush on the magpie while the background and floor were created using wet in wet to soften and blend the colours. The pieces are finished off by painting in sticks, flowers and grass in the base of the box.
Day 2 The Daisy and the Cardinal beetle. Our objective here was to create an early summer warm feel to our painting, with a sharp focus on the main flower and softening and blurring the background using washes wet in wet and adding some fine details once dry.
Here are the amazing results.
Day 3 We began with the early club where we painted the Hares head and used some dry painting and colour blending with wet in wet. Our focus was on drawing out the shape of the Hares head so that we created a good foundation for our painting.
Day 3 Session 2 The Exmoor pony at Firehills is quite a complex piece of work. Our aim here was to create a sense of depth using muted background colours and put the main object in the middle ground while having the large tree and scrub in the foreground. All of this while not losing focus on the pony. So we began by drawing out and then painting the pony in strong colour. The tree trunk was next and then the background using wet in wet and finally the foreground scrub to the left and in front of the pony.
